Los Angeles — Scott M. Adan, Ph.D., P.E., S.E., SECB, director of Seismic Assessment Services with IVI International, Inc., will present a just-scheduled session about the late-August American Canyon earthquake at the 2014 Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) Convention to be held in Indian Wells, Calif., Sept. 10-13, 2014.
Adan is presenting at two sessions, both on Friday morning September 12, 2014.
The first, from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., is a result of his recent deployment to Napa, California, where he assessed damage following the American Canyon earthquake.
From 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Adan’s presentation titled “New IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manual - Volume 4 (Steel), Design Example 5: Eccentrically Braced Frame Construction,” will be held as previously planned and announced. This session is part of Technical Track 2, and its acceptance follows a rigorous call for technical papers for this year’s convention, the theme of which is “Building Enhancement: Past, Present, and Future.”
The second presentation will incorporate and summarize work Adan published in the 2012 IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manual, which, through its various editions serves as a benchmark for structural and seismic related building code implementation. Eccentrically Braced Frame (EBF) buildings have increased capacity for absorbing damaging earthquake motions. EBFs are often used as part of the seismic force-resisting systems in buildings that are designed to resist severe earthquakes.
Adan consults institutional mortgagees and investor clients on seismic risk assessment, mitigation, and structural improvements. He has more than 23 years of experience in earthquake and structural engineering and an impressive list of professional certifications and committee memberships.
As a member of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), he was recently named to EERI’s Concrete Coalition Advisory Committee. He is also a member of SEAOC. His honors include an Award of Merit by SEAONC and a President’s Award for Outstanding Service by the Structural Engineer’s Association of Washington.
