Arup is providing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineering, energy modeling, lighting design, and façade consulting for the new Interdisciplinary Science & Engineering Complex (ISEC) at Northeastern University.
The complex broke ground Feb. 21.
Located in Boston and designed by Payette, an architectural design firm specializing in complex buildings for academic teaching, medical and scientific research, and health care, the first phase of this three-phase project is 220,000 square feet and abuts the Ruggles Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority subway station. It will include landscape and hardscape elements that will cross the tracks and touch the campus in two locations. Construction is expected to be complete in 2016.
“Highly technical and high-performance buildings are one of Arup’s specialties, and the intersection between laboratory and academic institutions creates an interesting juxtaposition of services,” said Mark Walsh-Cooke, principal with Arup. “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Payette yet again on a facility that will change the face of research in Boston.”
Arup collaborates regularly with Payette on assignments throughout the world, including the Harvard University Art Museum and the recently awarded Boston University Center for Integrated Life Science and Engineering Building (CILSE).
Energy efficiency built-in
Radiant floor system and modular multi-stack chillers and condensing boilers ensure long-term savings.
Arup has implemented several energy-efficient solutions for the mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection systems at the new the Earl Shapiro Hall at the Laboratory Schools Early Childhood Campus.
The 117,000-square-foot high-tech and energy-efficient school facility is associated with the University of Chicago and offers an innovative, experience-based learning program emphasizing flexible child-teacher interaction and imagination. The new facility houses nursery, kindergarten, and first- and second-grade students from across the City of Chicago.
Arup worked with executive architect FGM Architects, and design architect Valerio Dewalt Train Associates to determine the functional needs of the facility in the framework of energy efficiency and natural light.
In response to the well-lit, floor-to-ceiling glass situated along the perimeter of the new facility, Arup engineered a radiant floor system to offset heat loss and provide regulatory comfort for the children and staff. To ensure long-term energy savings, modular multi-stack chillers and condensing boilers were selected for the facility’s central plant. Providing isolation valves at the modular chillers enables both the chilled water and condensed water systems to operate variable flow, resulting in significant reductions in consumption.
Earl Shapiro Hall opened in the fall of 2013 with a rooftop celebration. The building is targeting LEED Silver certification.
