The structural engineering profession is evolving constantly. Behind each revolutionary design, education, or industry/code reform is the force of an individual who is not afraid to push the limits of design and technology. Each year, Structural Engineer magazine recognizes many of these respected individuals with its Power List. This editorial credits 10 leaders in the structural engineering sector who are dedicated to advancing the profession and developing solutions to some of the world's toughest problems.

|Louis F. Geschwindner, Ph.D., P.E.
Geschwindner’s career in the architectural and engineering industry spans more than 40 years. He served as an American Institute of Steel Construction vice president for nine years. According to the AISC website, “Lou was responsible for leading the development of the 2005 AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings and the 13th Edition AISC Steel Construction Manual, as well as all other technical activities of the Institute. In recognition of Lou’s contributions – and his love of education – AISC has renamed its annual seminar series in his honor. “
Geschwindner has also served as a faculty member in the Architectural Engineering Department at Penn State for more than 30 years, and he and his wife Judy established a scholarship to provide tuition support to undergraduates.
|Lawrence G. Griffis, P.E.
Griffis is a senior principal and president of the Structures Division at Walter P Moore and Associates. Griffis has directed, or made significant contributions to, the structural design of over 80 major buildings throughout the United States and internationally. He is considered one of the top specialists in wind engineering in the United States and contributed to the development of the ASCE 7 wind standard used by all U.S. building codes. He has been a pioneer in the design of retractable roof stadiums and ballparks in the United States, including Reliant Stadium and Minute Maid Park in Houston, Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and the Cardinals Stadium in Phoenix. Projects completed under his direction have been honored with numerous structural awards. In 1994, Griffis’ career body of work in the development of composite steel systems was recognized by the American Institute of Steel Construction when he was named T.R. Higgins Lecturer – the highest honor given by the steel industry in the United States.
|Ronald O. Hamburger, S.E., SECB
Hamburger is a structural engineer and senior principal with the San Francisco office of Simpson Gumpertz & Heger. Hamburger has 37 years of experience in structural design, evaluation, construction supervision, research, building code and standards development and education. In addition to designing buildings, he has served as engineer of record for the repair of earthquake-damaged buildings, performed thousands of seismic evaluations, and designed seismic and blast resistance upgrades for several hundred structures. He has published more than 100 papers on the response of buildings to extreme events, including earthquakes, blasts and terrorist attacks, and contributed basis materials for structural design provisions contained in building codes. He has also authored numerous articles and chapters in handbooks on earthquake resistant design and structural steel design.
|Andrew Herrmann, P.E., SECB, F.ASCE
Herrmann is the 2012 president of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). An infrastructure champion, Herrmann chaired ASCE’s Advisory Council for the 2009 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure. Herrmann has testified on behalf of ASCE multiple times before Congress and provided numerous media interviews advocating for increased investment in America’s infrastructure. A principal of Hardesty & Hanover, LLP, Consulting Engineers, headquartered in New York City, Herrmann has provided project management and engineering expertise for many of the firm’s bridge projects during his 38 years with the firm, and was responsible for the design, inspection, rehabilitation, construction support, analysis, and rating of fixed and movable bridges, highways, railroads, and major transportation projects.
|Peter Irwin Ph.D., P.Eng.
Irwin is project principal and chairman at RWDI Consulting Engineers and Scientists in Ontario, Canada. He is a leader in advancing the science of wind engineering internationally and is the inventor of the Irwin Sensor, an instrument designed to measure pedestrian level winds in wind tunnels. He has published over 150 papers and received countless awards and recognitions. His work includes many notable projects world-wide, including the Trump Tower in Chicago, the Burj Khalifa and Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport.
|Ron Klemencic P.E., S.E.
Klemencic is president of Magnusson Klemencic Associates. Over the past 10 years, he has led MKA’s pioneering development of a revolutionary approach: Performance-based seismic design methodologies for high-rise buildings. Klemencic has also led a variety of other research endeavors, is a member of multiple professional organizations and a past five-year chairman of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. Klemencic has also received many honors in recognition of his efforts, including American Concrete Institute’s Alfred E. Lindau Award, in 2010. In addition to his committee and research activities, Klemencic has served in a leadership role for $5.2 billion worth of MKA projects over the last five years.
|Roger A. LaBoube
Dr. LaBoube is Curator’s Teaching Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering, director of the Wei-Wen Yu Center for Cold-Formed Steel Structures and director of the Student Design and Experiential Learning Center at the Missouri University of Science & Technology. He has made significant career-long contributions to the research and development of standards relating to the design of cold-formed structural steel, and is a recognized world-wide expert in this field. Dr. LaBoube is active in several professional organizations and societies, including a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute’s (AISI) Committee on Specifications for the North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members, and member of AISI’s Committee on Framing Standards. He is a recipient of the 2010 AISI Market Development Industry Leadership Award.
|Ahmad Rahimian, Ph.D., P.E., S.E., F.ASCE
Rahimian is the chief executive officer of WSP Cantor Seinuk in New York City. According to the WSP Cantor Seinuk website, he is “an expert in the behavior of structures under seismic and wind loading, he has written and published widely on designing towering structures and tall buildings and has been involved in the design and engineering of buildings, stadiums, and bridges in cities around the world. He holds a U.S. patent in seismic protective design. Dr. Rahimian is also chairman of one of the committees responsible for updating the New York City Building Code.”
|Robert T. Ratay, Ph.D., P.E
Ratay is a consulting structural engineer in private practice, and adjunct professor at Columbia University in New York. His current practice and teaching are focused on the investigation and litigation support of structural and construction failures. At Columbia University he has developed and teaches the graduate course of Forensic Structural Engineering. Ratay is the editor-in-chief of three books: Handbook of Temporary Structures in Construction and Forensic Structural Engineering, both published by McGraw-Hill, and Structural Condition Assessment, published by John Wiley & Son. He is the originator and Chairman of the SEI/ASCE 37, Design Loads on Structures During Construction Standard Committee. Ratay is a fellow of the ASCE where he previously was a member of the Board of Governors of the Structural Engineering Institute. At the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), he chairs the newly formed Working Group on Forensic Structural Engineering.
|Robert Sinn P.E., S.E., SECB, F.ASCE, FIABSE, LEED AP
Sinn is a member of Thornton Tomasetti’s senior leadership team. Before joining Thornton Tomasetti in 2007, he was an associate partner with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Sinn has designed a wide range of structures in more than a dozen countries – specializing in high-rise buildings and long-span structures – and has won numerous awards for his engineering innovation. His portfolio of work includes the 1,000-meter-tall Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, currently preparing to start construction; the zero carbon emission Masdar Headquarters Building in Abu Dhabi for Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company; the award-winning Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago, the tallest reinforced concrete building in the United States to date; and the award-winning Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, which required complex 3D structural analysis and design.
