Site design optimization
Bentley Systems, Inc., acquired a minority interest in BLUERIDGE Analytics, Inc., the provider of SITEOPS — a site design optimization technology that utilizes cloud computing to save time and cost while improving land development outcomes. Used by civil engineering professionals, real estate developers, and land planners, the patented, web-based application provides early cost estimating data, multiple site design alternatives, and fast site configuration simulations, all while reducing overall costs, the company said. The conceptual designs are compatible with DGN, DWG, LandXML, and other file formats, and can be exported into software such as Bentley’s MicroStation, Power InRoads, and Power GEOPAK for final design work.

GIS software
ESRI’s new ArcGIS 10 software offers powerful spatial analysis, improved imagery use and management, new ways to share information, GIS in the cloud, GIS in the field, and increased productivity, the company said. New features include Python scripting for automating common tasks and analyses; an analysis called location-allocation, which helps users understand how their facilities’ placements in a given network impact their ability to serve their customers; and a search service in the ArcGIS server, which makes it easier to discover and organize geographic data throughout the enterprise. Plus, the software can be used on the Amazon cloud, and has a customizable, out-of-the-box application that allows users to extend mobile projects to in-vehicle and tablet-based PCs. This concept will be extended to Apple’s iOS platform.

FloGard Perk Filter earns GULD
KriStar Enterprises, Inc.’s FloGard Perk Filter — a radial media cartridge-style filtration system with multiple configurations available in catch basins, manholes, or vaults — achieved a General Use Level Designation (GULD) from the Washington State Department of Ecology for Basic and Phosphorous Treatment. The report’s findings indicate average removal ratings exceeding the standards established for both total suspended solids and for phosphorous.

Erosion control products
North American Green’s HydraMatriCx hydraulically applied erosion control products posted the best results ever published in large-scale slope protection tests by the American Association of State Highway Transportation and Official’s National Transportation Product Evaluation Program (AASHTO-NTPEP). HydraCX Extreme Slope Matrix demonstrated 100 percent soil protection while HydraCM Steep Slope Matrix registered 99.7 percent effectiveness in reducing soil erosion. Both products are applied with conventional hydroseeding equipment and designed for erosion control and vegetation establishment on steep to extreme slope gradients.

Online stormwater design tool
Advanced Drainage Systems, Inc., announced a new, online program for designing stormwater retention/detention systems called ADS Design Pro. Once engineers register and create a secure password at, they can select the proper components and layout their design. The program contains technical resources for creating a corrugated high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe project that can be shared with others through the site and also stored for future reference. The resulting plan is then delivered in PDF or DXF format.

Remote sensing data products
Merrick GeoSpatial Solutions, a business unit of Merrick & Company, added helicopter-acquired remote sensing data products to its portfolio. The firm purchased the Optech Orion C200 light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensor, which provides a 200 kHz pulse rate, programmable field of view and scan rate, low operational height above ground, elevation accuracy and low shot noise, vegetation penetration, power line feature collection capabilities, compact size, and low weight. Plus, the company will purchase several other sensors, which will provide high-resolution color orthophotography, high-resolution oblique imagery, color infrared orthophotography, and hyperspectral imaging.
