Free structural engineering software
CSC, Inc. is now providing the following calculations free so that structural engineers can try its TEDDS software:
- Structural Wood Beam Analysis & Design (NDS 2005),
- Seismic Force (IBC 2006), and
- Retaining Wall Analysis & Design (ACI318-05).
According to CSC, key capabilities of TEDDS include clear, high-quality, accurate, and consistent calculations that are easy to check; documents that are easy to save, print, and re-calculate; and the ability to handle design changes quickly and efficiently.

Building information modeling
Cadsoft Corporation and iLevel by Weyerhaeuser are working together to deliver an integrated building information modeling (BIM) solution to the residential construction industry. The latest release of Cadsoft Envisioneer software includes iLevel’s structural frame products, allowing residential designers to have accurate iLevel product and dimensional information at the beginning of the design process. The two companies intend to establish interoperability between their residential software technologies: iLevel’s Javelin design software and Cadsoft Envisioneer.

CINTEC America, Inc., offers Paratec (PARApet TEChniques), a versatile method of internal structural reinforcement that is tailored to meet the specific requirements of masonry parapet and retaining walls. The Paratec system strengthens low parapet masonry walls—such as those found on roofs or balconies, or a low wall that is part of a bridge or an embankment—while remaining sensitive to the original architecture and without narrowing roadways or rebuilding the wall. This new system is a targeted approach to solving problems associated with older masonry structures that are subject to wind loading, seismic movement, vehicular impact, and foundation subsidence.

Cranes Software International Limited released NISA DesignStudio Version 16, a cost-effective software solution for individual structural engineers who predominantly analyze and design multistory buildings, apartment complexes, and industrial enclosures made of reinforced concrete and steel. The product has reporting and graphing features and automatically generates detailed AutoCAD drawings. Enhancements include: load specification options, enhanced modeling features, new features to design raft foundations as per rigid beam theory, design of flat slabs using equivalent frame method, shell elements, and shear wall design as per Indian standards.

LEED calculator for concrete
The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) introduced the Recycled Content and Regional Material Calculator for the Concrete Industry (LEED calculator), an Excel-based program that calculates concrete’s contribution to the LEED 2.2 and LEED 2009 Recycled Content and Regional Material credits. The calculator allows input on project details, concrete producer, and other applicable information. The program provides the results in a single-page letter that can be provided to the LEED-Accredited Professional, project manager, or building owner. The LEED calculator is another in a series of NRMCA efforts to emphasize the environmental and sustainable qualities of ready-mixed concrete.

Roof, floor, and form deck
The International Code Council Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) issued three Evaluation Reports recently to Consolidated Systems, Inc. (Metal Dek Group, a unit of CSi). The ICC-ES structural evaluation of 33 roof, floor, and form deck panel products included section properties, web crippling, diaphragm shear, and composite loads. The reports also address installation, inspections, and conditions of use. All products comply with the 2006 International Building Code. According to Allan Abbata, P.E., engineering manager of CSi, Metal Dek Group is the industry’s only deck manufacturer with full-service coil-coating capability.
