Design software

North American Green recently released the sixth upgrade of the company—€™s Erosion Control Materials Design Software —€” ECMDS 4.3.

Based on the Federal Highway Administration—€™s HEC #15, the U.S. Department of Agriculture—€™s Handbook #667, and the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation, EMCDS 4.3 enables engineers to design erosion control BMPs to meet NPDES regulations. Modules comprise slope protection design, channel protection design, and vegetation selection. ECMDS 4.3, which is free, can be accessed online, obtained on CD-ROM, or downloaded at www.nagreen.com.

Biodegradable erosion control blankets

Rolanka—€™s BioD-Mat 70 erosion control blanket is woven from machine spun, 100-percent biodegradable bristle coir twines. According to the company, the blankets last four to six years in the field, which allows designers and specifiers to exceed the design limits of other types of organic erosion control blankets and make them ideal for soil bioengineering applications.

The open weave in the BioD-Mat 70 allows reseeding before and after installation. The 0.4-inch by 0.5-inch open weave allows planting of plugs through the mat without cutting the blanket.

Additionally, wildlife will not feed on the mats, the mats hold moisture for seed germination and seedling growth, and their dark brown color makes them aesthetically pleasing.

Hydraulically applied erosion control

Profile Products—€™ Hydro-Blanket Bonded Fiber Matrix (BFM) provides erosion control on steep slopes susceptible to heavy rains. It replaces the company—€™s Conwed Fibers Hydro-Mulch 2500 and Terra-Mulch BFM products. According to the company, Hydro-Blanket BFM—€™s combination of thermally refined wood fibers and multi-dimensional tackifiers provides greater water-holding capacity and allows more complete germination and faster vegetation establishment on steep slopes. When Hydro-Blanket BFM dries, it conforms to the soil to form a breathable, built-in-place blanket that is environmentally safe and biodegradable. Profile Products says that hydraulically applied Hydro-Blanket BFM is less expensive and faster to install than blankets or sod and offers greater coverage than other BFMs.

Permanent turf reinforcement

SI Geosolutions offers Pyramat, a permanent, non-degradable, rolled erosion control product composed of UV-stabilized, synthetic fibers that are processed into a 3-D matrix. The turf reinforcement mat uses what the company calls X3 fiber technology that provides more than 40 percent greater surface area and creates a thick matrix with numerous void spaces for trapping water, soil, and seed. According to SI Geosolutions, tests —€” using Erosion Control Technology Council (ECTC) Draft Test Method #4 —€” indicated that Pyramat facilitated a 50- percent increase in seed germination and plant growth during the first 21 days after placement. Using ECTC Draft Test Method #3, Pyramat reduced soil loss by 30 percent under unvegetated, high shear stress water flow conditions.

Construction site erosion control plans

Proprietary, web-based software from envirotraxx, an environmental site management and erosion control consulting company, provides a step-by-step process to help users apply for National Pollution Discharge Elimination (NPDES) permits for construction sites in conformance with new amendments to the Clean Water Act. It also helps create an efficient, cost-effective stormwater pollution protection plan, as well as monitor and document the plan—€™s effectiveness. According to the company, envirotraxx notifies users if an erosion or NPDES permit issue arises.

Wood fiber biodegradable blankets

American Excelsior Company—€™s Curlex Netfree erosion control blankets are 100-percent biodegradable and designed to promote ideal growing conditions for grass seed, while protecting topsoil from wind and water erosion without the use of polypropylene netting on the top or bottom of the blanket.

Curlex blankets consist of softly barbed, interlocking, curled Great Lakes Aspen excelsior wood fibers that are stitched together with a 100-percent biodegradable thread. According to the company, Curlex Netfree eliminates the fear of plastic or jute netting getting caught up in mowing equipment or entrapping wildlife or pets. The blanket does not contain any weed seed, chemical additives, tackifiers, or paper products.
